As a business owner or entrepreneur, are you living by the power of follow up? Do you really understand the power of follow up? I was reading an eBook, and then I came across an interview with Jay Conrad the author of guerilla marketing. In the interview, he talked about how you can use the guerrilla marketing to retain customers and get more customers, and to do that you must live by the Power OF Follow Up. In this post I will be sharing my own opinion with you.
Every business owner or entrepreneur can introduce the power of follow up into his or her business. The power of follow up still works! If you really know how to go about it. Understanding the power of follow up and introducing it into your business will help retain more customers and it will also keep attracting customers.
The question I want to ask you is, what are you doing to retain any customer that come around to patronize you? Did you just allow the customer to leave your business location for his or her own home just like that? It is time you start building a reputable relationship with them, it’s time you start living by the power of follow up. Any customers that come around to patronize you try to offer the customer the best he or she ever wanted.
Offering of quality services is one of the elements that will make you win big in the business world, because if you don’t offer quality services there’s no way you can win big and live by the power of follow up in order to retain and attract more customers to your business because it will never happen.
The easiest way to retain and attract more customers to your business is to practice the power of follow up. If you are thinking that you don’t need it and that it’s a waste of time then you are not fit to be a business owner or an entrepreneur.
Incase you are wondering why you should use the power of follow up in your business; below are the reasons why you should:
Reduce Marketing Cost and Earn More
It will help reduce your marketing cost. If you are planning to go for high cost advertisement in order to promote your business, understanding the power of follow up will help you save it. Because when you get customers, you won’t just allow them to go just like that. You will make them work for you by making them refer their friends to you.
Gone are those days when you will be spending large amount of money on traditional marketing, but with guerilla marketing you will reduce your marketing cost and earn more. One of the things that will help you retain and attract customers is to use the power of follow up. When you understand it and you are able to use it effectively, before you know it, things will be moving on the right path.
Encourage the Word Of Mouth
When you offer your customers the best, what do you think will happen? I’m sure they would preach the word about your business. The way you treat them will make them support the notion of telling people about you and your business.
If you are able to use the power of follow up effectively, there’s no how it will not help you encourage the word of mouth.
Customers Experience
Customers will be glad to share their feelings with you; they will never hesitate to call you at any time and chat with you about how you can do more in order to serve them better. But if you don’t live by the power of follow up, no customers will ever share their experience with you, no customers will keep their mouth shut when you did something wrong by mistake.
Customers will love to stand by you in any condition you might put yourself in, they will never run away from you yet they will help you take your business to a greater height.
What to Do In Order To Live By the Power of Follow Up
Living by the power of follow up is not a hard thing to do, one of the things you need to do is to know your ideal customers, people who will need your product. I’m sure you must have taken proper research about who your ideal customers are? So when you get that, you just have to reach out to them in order to notify them that you are in the business world. And when they come around to patronize you, never let them go just like that.
Offer them top quality services; make sure that the services you are offering them solve their problem. If you can’t do that, then you can’t live by the power of follow up.
Before letting them leave your business location, engage with your customers in a cool and good manner, try to get their contacts and you also should hand over your business card to them, so incase if they need your services again or they have a friend who might be interested in working with you, they should help you hand over the card to the person. And if you own an online business your email list would be better!
So when you’ve successfully gotten their contacts, make sure your first three messages should not be about the latest good you have in store! It must be messages that will help build a strong foundation for the relationship. Get to know them better and when trying to ask questions let them know that the question you are asking them is about knowing them and how you can serve them better.
After building a relationship with them, you can now send them updates on the latest good in store and their prices. So if they are interested (I’m sure they will be interested) they will give you a call or come over to where your business is located or if your company owns a website where customers can purchase your goods they can purchase it online.
One of the things you should do to make your customers feel happy is to know the date of each of your customer birthday, when you get to know that, try to send them birthday wishes, send birthday gifts to them or give them a call in order to show that you really value them. Always engage with them and never let them go after sending products update to them so that it won’t be as if you are trying to rip them off or all you care about is the buying.
To live by the power of follow up, you must always do things that will make your customers feel happy, things that will make you serve them better and things that will always make them remember you where ever they are.
If you are able to do this and you do it right, you will attract and retain customers. Customers would love to work with you because you’ve proved that you are the kind of person or your company is the kind of company they have been waiting for. Try to understand the power of follow up in the business world and start practicing it.

Hi Samuel,
Great post.
Getting a new customer can cost up to 10 times as much as retaining a customer.
Why not spend all your time on retaining customers? It isn’t as prestigious!
If you can keep building a base of loyal customers you will become rich, no doubt about it.

Retaining customers does not only cost less than getting new ones, but it is also an indicator of how well you are running your business. If you can’t retain your customers then clearly you are not providing them with enough value for them to stick around.

Good point. While I was an alarm sales manager, the KEY to recruiting was follow up. I can guarantee that you will lose customers , recruits, clients or whoever it might be, if you don’t follow up.
This is the Achilles heal in that industry. It might be more pronounced in the sales industry but it applies to everything else in business.

Hi Samuel,
Following-up is crucial. If you have built the trust and rapport necessary to provide someone your product/services, then romance that customer. Show them you care. Show them how important their trust is to you.
There have been studies showing how much more costly it is (don’t want to misquote it here) to acquire a new customer over marketing and reselling to a current one. The best part is, the selling part becomes a whole lot easier after they’ve purchased from you before. You simply educate them on what you have to offer next.
I like your suggestion of knowing some key details such as client birthdays. It’s the little things like that which turn the customer service funnel into an experience rather than just another step. Great post!

Sam – following up with prospective customers is definitely the best way to close a sale. Some people will say that following up with a customer to collect a decision can be somewhat pushy but there is absolutely no doubt that actually following up with customers has a highest sale closing percentage. I learned this from one of the “sales closing” masters, Jeff Combs. In fact, he’s been a mentor of mine for some time. Not to long ago I spoke with him over a call and it was great being able to ask him anything I wanted and to have him as a resource.
Anyone that says following up with customers is ont a good thing knows nothig about sales.
