Do You Know That You Are Causing More Harm Than Good?

by Samuel · 33 comments

Most business owners do carry out operations that will cause more harm to their business than good. They never knew that it can make their business catch cold by so doing.

I’m sure you would be wondering what I mean by causing more harm to your business than good? Below are ways you are causing more harm to your business than good:

You Deal With Cheap Customers:

Good businesses don’t deal with cheap customers. Cheap customers are people who want to get the best from you but they are never ready to give you their best. These are the type of customers that can make your business catch cold.

Cheap customers are always looking for something that will be of top quality with little or no payment, they are the people who don’t care if you get your profits or not. These kinds of people are always looking for discounts and when the business stops offering discount they go elsewhere to look for discounts products.

I’m not saying that you should not offer discounts, if you are to offer discounts, offer it in a way that you won’t get exploited. Discounts do bring about mostly cheap customers. But from those customers, you will surely get the real customers who are ready to stand by you in terms of good and bad. The only problem with this type of customers is that they are few. But the technique you are going to use is to try to satisfy the real few ones, fight for the word of mouth so that they can help you spread the word about your business.

Most people do have great products but what kills them is the pricing. They want more sales so they prefer selling it at cheap price so that they can get more customers to patronize them, which is very wrong. You know what your product worth so why are you selling out your products at the rate that don’t worth it? It’s not by force everybody should buy your product so why are you trying to put yourself so low?

I guess you are very sure of your product? You know what it really worth? So charge the price you know your product worth, go for quality customers that will buy your product from you and when they see that your product deserve it, they will spread the word about your business. Don’t be scared of placing the actual price your product worth; don’t say that because you want to get more customers so you need to sell it at a low price. If you are doing that, you are calling for cheap customers.

I guess you know what you go through before creating a great product like that? So why do you want to give out that product at a rate it does not worth?

So to cut the story short, go for the actual price your product worth, don’t be scared of competitors. Focus on producing the best so that customers can stand by you and help you spread the word about your business.

You Market Your Product In An Illegal Way:

You have a great product to sell, so why do you want to kill your business with your illegal marketing strategy?

There are common mistakes you should avoid when marketing your product so that you can get attention from people in order to turn them to your customers. Read my post on common mistakes marketers should avoid.

If you are thinking that marketing your product in an illegal way will help do more good to your business, you are losing it big time. Even those who call themselves marketers are not worth to be called marketers. With the way they market products you will feel like slapping them. So if you really want to get people’s attention you should market your product in a legal way.

You Try To Satisfy Everybody When You Know That It Won’t Help:

Many business owners always try to satisfy their customers without taking any thought on how it would both satisfy them. All because they heard customers should always be satisfied so they went ahead to follow that principle without thinking of how it will help them too.

We know that we must always try to satisfy our customers but not in a way you yourself would not be happy with it. There’s no saying that says “always satisfy your customers even if you are going to get hurt when doing it” if you should follow that principle your business will sneeze.

Many business owners encourage this idea without knowing that they are causing more harm to their business than good.  They always feel that if they should do it that way, their competitors will step back while they get ahead. I doubt if you will.

Your good customers would want you to satisfy them in a way that you yourself would be happy with it only cheap customers would want you to satisfy them even when you are not happy with it.

Friends In Business:

You are always offering your services to friends on credit. Let me tell you something, “There’s no friend in Business” if your friends want your business to grow, they should always pay for the services rendered.

Business grows when friends pay for the service that’s been rendered to them. Don’t say that because he or she is your friend so they don’t need to pay for the service that’s been rendered to them. If you keep doing this, am sure everybody would love to be your friend so that you can offer your services to them for free and when your business catch cold they will be nowhere to be found. Which is very bad?

If you don’t want to cause more harm to your business, let your friends pay for the service that’s been rendered to them, if at all you want to help them, you can just help cut down the price or try to settle the matter when you guys see yourself at home or somewhere else but not in the business home. If you’ve being doing this, I’m advising you to put a stop to that act.

Samuel – You have given some solid advice in this post here. I liked your advice on not trying to satisfy everyone under the sun. There is definitely a fine line between satisfying customers and hurting your business by trying to satisfy customers.

However, the general belief in the business world is that “the customer is always right”, so I guess this is why so many businesses end up hurting themselves by following this unwritten rule word for word.

But it’s like you said, as long as you have good loyal customers they won’t expect for you to satisfy them if it won’t benefit your business as well.

Hi Samuel:

I liked reading this blog post. Quality in doing everything makes a big difference. So in order to maintain the good quality of your site you have to accept only what is good quality. Even customer.

I agree with you. But then again you can not deny any customer? Or how do we deny a harmful customer in a polite way that our business does not get hurt.

All this is become very challenging for the business owner. We know our customer base, but there are new added on a daily basis and it is hard to know them?
However as a business owner we have to maintain the quality. I understand.

All the best

Hi Fran,
If you know that the customer you are dealing with is a cheap customer, try to let the customer in a way it won’t hurt the person or you. Just do it in a friendly manner. I hope you get what I’m saying? Thanks so much!

Hey Samuel – There are a bunch of different business structures that cater to a vast customer base. There’s a significant importance to base a product and service on value not the actual product or service. I learned early in sales that successful people don’t sell products or services – they uniquely sale the benefits. To do this, there’s a requirement to know your customer base intimately. Once this understanding is reached between both parties, there’s a level of respected value – which gives the customer a clear understanding that “whatever perceived” value is worth more too much to be discounted.

It’s part of the learning experience to “cause more harm than good” but that’s a tough thing to define because you will never have all the information available to make that decision or ultimate determination.

The customer is always right in the sense that they can either spend their money with you or someone else. The business owner is right in the sense that they can choose to do business with that customer, or target and do business with someone else.

All actions in life are either voluntary or through force.

Thank goodness for what is left of the free market and capitalism.

Samuel, I have often struggled with the 1st and 3rd points you mention. Especially just starting out as a freelancer, I would just try to drum up business anywhere, and often wound up working for the biggest cheapskates. People only interested in cutting costs and forgoing quality. The 3rd item reminds me just how much I’ve struggled with trying to please everyone. The first line I’ve been able to eliminate. The 3rd (people-pleaser) has been a tougher call. Once those are out of the way entirely, I’m on track. :) Thanks

I think that marketing your product in illegal ways gets you MORE attention than if you market using white hat, legal methods. However, people respect legal, organic, polite marketing I think.

This is a nice reminder for entrepreneurs Sam. Very nicely crafted. The points you mentioned are definitely worth the mention.

Two that got my attention are the focus on cheap customers and friends paying for their services. I am a big case study on friends not paying for their services, and I am beginning to learn a brutal lesson about business as regards this. A lot of them have taken me for granted as a result of this. Most especially because my business is a service based business, it is more easier to get advice for free than to get a product that you can touch for free. So most times, I get ripped off and don’t receive anything all in the name of friendship. However, I am working on what you suggested, better to lower the price than not asking for anything at all. It pays to always ask for something even though it seems irrelevant, it gives your friends the notion that you are in business not a charity organization. I will pay more attention to doing this more consciously this year.

Hi Samuel,

Reading this reminded me of a business idea I heard, from Robin Sharma. It goes “Under-promise and over-deliver”, and I think that’s so true and ideal for today’s world, where everyone has gotten used to ‘normal’. The complete opposite of what you write about here.

Thanks for sharing my friend :-)

Hi Samuel,

Very nice post! In regards to pricing, I do agree with you that we shouldn’t put our products too low, neither too high. It should be what we believe the product is worth. I think offering a discount for a specific time is a good idea though, this is what most companies do, but again the price shouldn’t be too low especially if the product if that of a high quality. Thanks for sharing

That’s why I love blog sites! Because you can truly express yourself, have a conversation and dialog sharing thoughts and such.

Of course there will be a lot of points made about this article and not everyone will agree but I definitely see where you are coming from in points number 1. in fact, I personally know some entrepreneurs who refrain away from giving anything for free because they know what kind of visitor FREE attracts. You mention this in your article.

All in all, I believe that offering anything for free all depends on what is the overall mission and strategy of your blog.

Nicely done Sam!

Hi Samuel…
These are all very valid points.
I’ve always believed that there is a buyer for everything…no matter how bad you may think it is…there is a buyer.
So, with that in mind we see that we set in motion the type buyer we are attracting by our price point. If we are pricing cheap…that is what we will attract.

That’s my problem with all these Giveaways that marketers are into. They attract all those looking for free stuff. Not many of those go on to buy anything…most are just around to collect anything they can get for nothing. No a real high end buyers list would you say?

Great information on your site Samuel…

Hey Samuel,

I definitely agree – you should work on providing value with your business, not bringing harm to your business.

I used to always try to please everyone, until I realized that, because everyone has different opinions, experiences, and thoughts, it would be literally impossible to please everyone. Now, I just work on writing valuable content, sharing what’s in my heart, and creating products that would be both valuable to me and my audience.

If others don’t agree with something I say, that’s fine. I love a valid debate – and I’ll encourage them to voice their opinions as well, and maybe I’ll learn from them in the process.

I find friends in business to be a big hindrance in one’s business. Sometimes, it’s really hard to say no to a friend, it may give the wrong impression. Perhaps it’s much better to anticipate this problem beforehand than to suffer it later.

These are good advice Samuel. :-)
