How to Manage Your Time in Your Internet Business – Work Better and Have More Fun

This is a guest post by Alex Papa.

More and more people are working from home these days, whether as freelancers, entrepreneurs or telecommuters for an outside company.

It’s projected that, by 2012, as much as 25% of the workforce will be working from a home office. This is great news for those who have always dreamed of escaping from the cubicle in an office block. However, though one of the benefits most of us have dreamed of is having control of our time, many people are surprised to find they have less of it once they’re working at home.

As someone who worked 40-hour weeks for years, I was really floored by how much time got away from me once I made the transition to blogging full time. I went from working 40 hours a week to working almost 60. I’m not much of a time management expert anyway, but I did think I’d have more time to live my life once I started working at home. It took some trial and error to find some ways to manage my time even though I was the only one managing my time. Here are a few things I’ve found that helped me get on track with my internet business so that I could have time to do all those things I came home to do.

Electronic Planners are Awesome, But £2 Desk Calendars are Better:

I am work addict and a good organizer of my priorities. Unfortunately, the former is stronger than the latter. While you might not be likewise afflicted, you may have found, like me, that due dates and deadlines have to be right in front of your eyes to stay in the front of your priorities. I do have an electronic planner in my laptop and an App planner in my iPhone, but all of my deadlines and due dates are on my small £2 paper calendar from Tesco and with my discount coupon code it was even cheaper. This way, the things that I really have to do are staring me in the face.

Write Your To-Do List Backwards:

This one applies to the desk calendar, too. I’ve found great success from writing my due dates and deadlines down, then working backwards. For instance, if I have 5 guest posts on list due Friday, I’ll write “Submit 5 Guest Posts” on the Friday space, then work backwards. I may break it down to one article per day, and enter “Write 1 Guest Post” on the spaces for Monday through Friday. This seems to help me stay on track much better than just writing the due date on Friday. That always seemed to result in me wasting time Monday through Wednesday, then stressing out and working a writing marathon Thursday and Friday.

Schedule Your Breaks:

It didn’t take me long to figure out that all that freedom of control over my time didn’t mean I wanted all of my time to be unstructured. Not long after starting to blog fulltime, I begun scheduling regular breaks just like in any job. I found I didn’t resent being told when I could have lunch, as long as I was the one setting the schedule. But, I am a lot more productive now that I was when I ate when I got hungry and took a coffee break when I needed caffeine. I get more done during the work times and enjoy my breaks more.

For me the biggest time savor has been planning by the week, organizing by the day.

When I write down everything I do during a week and then plan it out which day I should do what, I find ways to be more efficient and make work more smooth. I can also work on batching tasks.

Every morning I prioritize my day and start with task number one.

This method has made me much, much more efficient than I used to be.

Hi Daniel, Writing down tasks every morning or at the start of the week helps a lot in prioritizing! I find now that it’s a good idea to write down the time I need to take off to rest or relax or spend with family. Something like this: “Go for a walk with Emma” means that the time I spend with my daughter is scheduled and it is a priority, and when I do it I feel that I am not wasting time.

Hey Alex,

Thanks for the post dude!

Great points for managing your time better. That is very important to your success. With more power comes more responsibility. That means you are going to have to be able to manage your time productively, or run the risk of getting overwhelmed.

Scheduling breaks is pretty important. This is something I never really knew until I started blogging. There are many times you can take a break and loose track of time. It’s easy with social media these days.

Thanks again!

God bless,
William Veasley

I’m not especially good at time management. I always find that when I pre-plan my days that things goes smoother, but I don’t always do that. We use software for photographers to track appointments with customers, and I use Outlook’s calendar for personal reminders.

Hi TJ, I know time management is not easy. Like the management of any resource it takes a skill. Some mentor of my used to say, “Learn how to manage your time and you’ll learn how to manage your money”. How true!

The backwards to-do list: awesome. Doing so really helps you chunk out a project into manageable action items each day so you have a better chance of completing the task. Mentally it makes it more achievable.

Then there’s taking breaks. We aren’t machines. We need rest and to feel connected with others. Some of our best inspiration can come from times we aren’t researching or working. Embrace break time but when it’s time to work – get to it!

Breaks? We don’t need no stinkin’ breaks! LOL. just kidden. Definitely make your job easier though by being comfortable. I work from my couch with either my Yahoo! Radio playing or Netflix instant streaming on the Wii. I sit here all day every day doing consulting, design, marketing, and blogging. That’s all I do. Luckily, I have a treadmill here that I will start actually using soon. I hate to live up to the fat American label.

That’s really difficult… you may need to re-think your lifestyle! Working all night, sleeping all day and no social life won’t last very long. It just can’t!

Alex

Definitely agree with you there my friend. It’s very easy to get distracted when working from home. Having deadlines is a MUST otherwise the work expands to fit time allotted. If there is not time allotted, then work goes on forever!

You mentioned using electronic calendars to make sure you set deadlines but I would be interested to know what do you think are some of the best ways Internet Entrepreneurs or work from home entrepreneurs can stay on task and away from distractions?

Time management is the key to success. Planning the day really works well but I don’t do it. Scheduling and sticking to it is really important for bloggers since there lots of distractions when we are online. great points made.

Wonderful post Alex, effective time management is the key to the success. I always plan my schedules but rarely stick to it. I get tons of distractions while working from home. Nowadays I am more careful in planning and I am trying to stick to the plans as much as possible.

I agree, one of the benefits most of us have dreamed of when we start an internet business is having control of our time, but that is usually the total opposite.

I like your tip on writing your to do list backwards. Instead of wasting time get the most important tasks done first.

The way I manage my time is by putting in about 3 hrs of non-stop work and then taking a break. Thanks for sharing your tips Alex, I’m sure this is a problem that many of us are dealing with right now.

Hi Samuel,
Alex is no doubt a big name in online marketing and I love to read his articles.
As for as I am concerned for scheduling my blogging, I use my cell phone’s reminder for it, as cell phone is the only thing which I kept all the time with me. In this way I never miss anything.

Alex, I couldn’t agree more. I think one of the biggest mistakes people who are new to working at home, are not to plan. Once you realise that your office has just “moved”, but the same rules apply, you have taken a very significant step towards success.
I like the idea of writing your to-do list backwards!
