When people start an internet business the major mistake they make is that they forget, the business part. For most people online marketing is a quick way to making money without the hassle a regular business requires.
Building an online business is the same as building a regular (offline) business
It might be a short cut but the same rules apply for building and maintaining a business.
If you are to succeed you need a business plan, budgets, you need to outsource, delegate, work on time management, risk management, project prioritizing, human resource questions, business culture, the education of ourselves and/or employees, marketing, product management, branding, market planning and so on. If you do not do all of this, your business will not prosper.
The IT-bubble
When the internet was new we saw the same thing happen, lots of companies were started and as soon as the word internet was mentioned investors lined up to give them money.
The difference is that today it isn’t the investors who are lining up, it is us, regular people trying to make a living.
It is different today, but it is still the same
Don’t make the same mistakes that they made back then.
Today we know not to spend money in the same way as they did back then, but to make money you need to build a business, not just a website.
Long term success vs. short-term profit
It is possible to forget everything I have written in this article and still make short-term profits, the problem is that you will slowly kill your market making any long-term success impossible.
This is very common among Telemarketing companies (in the real world) they work through their markets and within a few years they need to switch markets.
This allows them to start over, but they will never grow into hugely successful companies, it forces them to start over from scratch every few years.
5 Things to think about when building a business
1. Have a business plan.
Every minute you spend on planning is 10 minutes you will save on execution.
Making decisions before you start (or before you continue) about how you are going to make money, promote your business, what help you will need, how to approach the people you will need help from, what you are going to spend money on and what you aren’t going to spend money on and so on, is going to save you a lot of time and money in the future.
2. Over deliver on your promises.
The best way to make a lot of money is by building relationships with your customers, which is best done by over delivering on your promises. If your customers trust that they will get something worth 50 dollars for every 20 they spend, they won’t be able to wait to give you more and more money, because that means more value to them.
3. Build a sales funnel moving customers forward towards larger and larger deals.
Once you start building relationships you need to make a plan for how you will move your customers through your funnel into larger and larger deals.
4. Have a marketing plan.
I want to give this a separate point even though it is closely related to the business plan. This is what most online marketers do best; plan how to build traffic and so on. Do not forget this step since you cannot make money without marketing.
5. Don’t give up, keep at it and keep improving, as long as you over deliver you will succeed.
Even though you might make 0 dollars and 0 cents your first year, don’t give up, keep learning and improving, sooner or later you will have learned enough to succeed.
Conclusion
Success online is the same as success offline. The same rules apply, but if used correctly, online business can be a shortcut to building a profitable business.

Hi Samuel,
Marketing is all about creating network with people and then influence them to buy your product/service. I know it’s not as easy as I just write it. I totally agree with you that you must have an strategy to influence someone. You can’t succeed without an solid strategy.

I’ve seen people jump about because they’ve made a quick, short term amount of cash from their blogs and their sole intentions is to make money. Sure it might look good and get people motivated, but short term really doesn’t help and you put more focus into repeating the same thing over without looking forward to the future for ways to make even more money.

You rock!
Hi Samuel,
You gave some solid tips there.
One of my friends still has an online store he built around 15 years ago, and at that time the website was doing really well and ranked high for a number of keywords. Right now he’s somewhere on page 3 and can’t get any higher because he took it for granted when it mattered most. There wasn’t much competition then, but slowly people came from behind and pushed him down.
So it’s important to have a long-term plan and keep up to date with the changes the internet makes.

Sam – Excellent points!
I wouldn’t say that your 5 points are things people need to think about when starting a business. I would say that those are 5 things people MUST do when starting a Business!
I love the fact that you mentioned a Business plan as being the first thing to do when starting a business. Here in the United States, many people start Internet Businesses because of the benefits that are associated when it comes to taxation of income.
I recently heard of a few IRS (Internal Revenue Service) cases in the US where people were not deemed a legitimate business after being Audited by the IRS, simply because they did not have a Business Plan and were not operating like a Business (i.e. keeping proper records of income vs expenses, did not have the proper accounting software, did not have a business entity, etc) and as a result any past income expenses were “disallowed” from being applied to any income earned from a job.
This mean that they would have had to pay back all of those taxes that were once deducted because of their business. As a result, the “entrepreneurs” had to pay back, in one of the cases, as much as $50,000 back to the IRS simply because they did not have a business plan and therefore were not seen as a legitimate business in the eyes of the Government.
This is something people need to take more seriously. The US Government and the FTC are really starting to crack down on people who call themselves home based business owners and are at a much higher risk for being audited but the IRS

I would say the best point in this article is no# 2 which shows the importance of commintment
Most of the small & starter internet marketers gets excited & keep collecting new projects while they fail to think that they are promising beyong their capabilites
and knowingly or unknowingly destory their relationships with the clients due to not delivering the work on time
Point no# 5 is also not less interesting to talk about, most if not all of starters think that its Internet & they will start getting things on Autopilot
they will keep on getting payments even while they are sleeping, well the hard truth is: it won’t happens. – money is money whether its online or offline world
and you have to deliver the best & keep struggling until you meet success, if at some point you give up then you are gone!

Having no or less profit while building long term relationship with your customer is better than having one time lot of profit.
Take your business wisely and focus on customer relationship is a good way to succeed forever.

Hi Samuel,
as an online entrepreneur myself I find your blog and this post particulary very interesting for myself. It is interesting and important for an entrepreneur to know what mistakes online marketers usually do and of course how to avoid these mistakes. As far as I noticed from my own entrepreneur and marketing experience one of the biggest mistakes of many online marketers is the wrong keyword research. So, selecting the wrong keywords from the very beginning and optimizing website for them marketers just waste their time, because they don’t get targeted traffic to a website in the end. So, the first stage that an online entrepreneur has to take is to perform the correct analisis of keywords.

You know what Samuel you are right. Online business is as tricky as a regular business but a word of advice to those who traditional business who have not gone online… do it now! There are a lot of social networks and blogging platforms and easy and inexpensive advertising online and it might just save your business! I guess the most important thing to remember when starting a business online is you have to really organize your tasks and follow a timeline and manage your time well. You would not want to waste money on launching something online only to blow it all off. Online followers are as important as frequent buyers. They spread the word about your product… fast!

Hi Samuel,
Those are some really good point. Good networking with people can go a long way in winning their trust and in turn selling your products to them. Having a well defined strategy is also important. One must move away from the sole intention of making money if he/she has to survive in the online space in the long term. We should also accept competition and learn from them.
