The Social Network- Lessons Learned From The Movie

by Samuel · 22 comments

I watched a movie recently, and the title of the movie is THE SOCIAL NETWORK. The movie is about how Mark Zuckerberg got started with Facebook and how he built it into a billionaire company. I guess most of you might have watched it? If you haven’t watched the movie, I think you need to go pick it up and watch because you will learn a lot from the movie.

After watching the movie, I learned a lot of things from it and I would like to share it with you guys in order to take one or two things from it. Read on and let me know how you feel about what I learned from the movie (please pardon me, I won’t be talking about the lessons I learned in form of story but I will only share the overall points with you)

Lessons Learned: You don’t have to share your startup idea with anybody just because of the sake of getting feedback on the idea, because you don’t know who is who. People who you share your idea with might have another way of improving the idea. And instead of them telling you and express their mind with you; they will feel like giving it a shot and stabbing you on the back.

That’s why I said that, if you are going to talk about your startup idea with someone, you must know the kind of person you talk about your startup idea with. Why I said that was because, even if you can’t trust anybody, you just have to trust someone. It doesn’t mean that you have to pay attention to what they say, yours is to listen or not!

When sharing your idea with someone, make sure you don’t give the person the full details. You can just summarize what your startup idea is all about in two sentences. But what matters most is the execution of the idea. You might not be the only thinking about that idea, so you just have to go for it and launch it! During the process of transforming your startup idea into a reality, you will learn a lot from it.

As the founder of the startup, you must be bold, you must think big and dream big even when members of your team don’t understand your vision you must tell them that you are getting close to the promise land. And you must be ready to adapt to the startup life. A great founder who understands what it takes to build a business must always look for a way to win; I mean you must be addicted to WINNING.

Thinking about failure is one of the things that will kill your startup and I doubt if it will make it prosper. If you are to build your core team members (cofounders) make sure this people on your server are ready to work with their entrepreneurial minds and make sure that there’s no shady attitude in it. Also hire smart people, people who cherish your vision and not the people with the otherwise. When it comes to building your team, make sure you exercise patience in order not to hit the bad end. Don’t rush and pick anyone who don’t fit your criteria, someone who don’t have the skill you’re lacking.

It’s easy for founders of a company to quarrel and break the whole building apart, but when there’s respect in the team and no one tends to take things personal, all will be fine.

Founders should always be ready to lead, listen to their core members and brainstorm together on how to make it rain (I mean how you will take the company to the next level). You must know who have the final say and make sure you don’t do things to please your partner. Do the things that will satisfy you all and not the things that will not satisfy you, because it might lead to destruction of the company.

All ideas must be protected, you and your cofounders must sign a deal that any idea you talked about must belong to the company. Cofounders who are full of shady attitudes don’t build a great business; they will want to make sure that they do things that will make the company fall apart so that they can go their own way and start their own company, and at the end of the game most of them never build a great company.

Those who think that way are always full of crap and they usually end up blaming themselves. You the founder of the team must not be strong headed all the time, because there are some situations whereby the actual solution to your company is in the hands of your team members.  So learn how to be open minded and know when to follow your guts.

External influence can make you fall, that’s if you are not strong enough and if you don’t truly believe in your startup idea. But if you really believe in your startup idea and you truly know that your startup has a bright future, you just have to keep thinking of the way forward.

Founders who can be easily influenced by external forces don’t build a great company. If I may say, a founder must be the person who knows how to control his or her emotions the most and he or she must be able to help his team mates overcome any external forces that might hinder them from been proactive.

Know the kind of people who you seek advice from, make sure you don’t just carry your company’s problem to meet someone who only have the experience and hasn’t been in the game before. Consult the right people and keep seeking for the right solution.

Note that, the most important thing is how your startup idea is going to impact people’s life and not how you will gain from it. If your startup can solve a pain, forget about the money because the money will be pursing you.

Be cool, nice and make working with you be the best thing people would love to see. Be creative, innovative and learn how to follow your guts. Also stay loyal to the game.

That’s all I can say about The Social Network. So whether you are building an internet company or offline company, all the above lessons shared really matters!

Hi Samuel,

I have seen “The Social Network” movie and it’s a awesome and must watch movie. The points you mentioned here I too get when I watched the movie specially the first one, Don’t share your idea with anyone first check the person and then share, that too not completely.

Before starting your business you must be confident enough that you can be successful, If you get any negative feeling please remove it before starting or you’ll be hurt very badly.

Hi Samuel, though I’ve not watched the video but your post has made it clear that this indeed is a revealing video. I think there is so much aspiring entrepreneurs can learn from the video.

I think the part about partners is really insightful because if business partners cannot find a way to work together with respect and mutual understanding, that business ventures is doomed.

Thanks for sharing.

Sam – I’ve seen the Social Network and it’s an awesome movie. It definitely has a lot of lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs or owners of potential profitable ideas. Great movie overall!

I think you made a bunch of interesting points. As for ideas, you definitely have to be careful who you share your ideas with but you also have protections such as Patents. I dont know how good a patent would have served the guys that accused Zuckerberg of stealing the idea for facebook but I would be interested to know how that would have helped.

Another point you mentioned was “thinking about failure, or what I interpreted to be as your “mindset” as an entrepreneur. Mindset is definitely the thing that either makes you or breaks you. If you think you can, you can! If you think you can’t, you can’t! It’s really that simple. Mindset is something that every entrepreneur needs to work on the most and something I don’t heat talked about too much.

I’ll touch on one final point, you mentioned that your idea or start-up should solve a pain or a problem. I think that is key! Too many entrepreneurs start a business thinking what their idea will do for them in terms of money or lifestyle but they fail to clearly articulate why their idea will help other people or how it will put a “pain” at ease. They fail to truly identify their market, customer and instead rationalize who will benefit form their idea. That’s definitely not the way to go about launching an idea or product.

@Hector Avellaneda: Love the awesome comment bro! Yeah, patents works fine. But telling the person you know or asking VC’s or Angel investors to sign a NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement) with you before sharing the idea with them won’t sounds good and they will not bother to do that.
So when sharing your idea with the people you know, don’t try to ask them to sign a NDA.
The mistakes those guys made was that, they haven’t build a reputable relationship with Zukerberg before telling him about the idea. They heard about him when he created facemash! I think they should have made him sign a NDA before pitching their idea to him. Because they would have had an advantage over him. I hope you understand what I’m trying to say?
You are right about mindset! Every entrepreneur must work on his or her mindset! Thanks so much for the comment! You rock :)

I really do feel I need to see this movie now Samuel!

I like what you said about only needing two sentences to summarise your startup idea; I once heard that if you can’t sum up your life’s purpose in a single sentence, then it isn’t clear enough. Sounds rough, but I believe it’s true.

Also, I believe that we should be always aiming to solve problems, regardless of whether we have a business or not. Of course, if we have a business, then it’s official, and we can use that to reach more people. If we aren’t helping anyone, then we’re harming them. There’s no middle ground :-)

@Stuart: Stu! This is an awesome movie man! How come you have not seen it!? Check it out bro!

I know some of it is Hollywood but it really goes into sharing a story about a lot of the challenges that Internet Entrepreneurs like us can face when building a business.

I think as far as being addicted to winning, that’s got to be taken in balance. I remember when I was plugged in to the StartupNation community, there were quite a few successful entrepreneurs who felt that most people will go through a couple failures before they get to their “big idea” that actually works. I don’t think failure is anything to be afraid of – of course, I guess that depends on how you define failure. For Edison, a “failed” attempt was really a success because he thought of himself as one step closer to finding the right answer.

@TJ McDowell: You’re right TJ. Failure is just a temporary defeat. Worrying about it won’t make us get closer to the promise land :) We have to screw up and keep thinking ahead. Love the quote! Thanks so much for the comment. You rock :)

Sam, i take only thing out of the movie ( the most important ) BE PASSIONATE and the rest will follow. And how would you know if you are passionate enough?

1. Never stop thinking of your startup
2. waking up 3 am to check your stats
3. You gf gets sick of you talking about it all the time
4. Your products gets traction . Altough this is the hardest to get it is the most important to prove that what you are doing is correct.

Hi Samuel,

I haven’t watched the movie yet, but one of my friends actually came to me after seeing it and proposed a business idea he came up with. He was so enthusiastic like he went hiking and ran over a pot of gold. Unfortunately it wasn’t realistic for the two of us, he knows nothing of coding, and i’m still digging my way through php.

But it got me interested, because it’s rare for a movie to inspire one in such a way. I have it on my list, just didn’t find the time to watch it.

Hi Samuel,
I heard so much about this movie that does not attract me at all right now. Probably ought to see him when he was released, now is too late.
However, i’m glad that I came across your article because even though I have not even seen the movie I still learn something.

Hi Samuel,
I have seen the movie and i believe you are right about not the sharing the idea.we should have confidence in ourselves. We all have a hidden talent and by sharing we are just losing uniqueness.
